�For some time now design in kitchens has returned to its central position: interior projects nowadays tend to open kitchens up towards the living areas in homes. These changes are also determined by the economic and sales value of houses: it is preferable to have an open living area rather than separate spaces. This single area changes the conceptual layout of a house, making the kitchen its central point � functional and above all emotional. In the United States and in the Far East this is already reality and new buildings include an idea of the layout of the kitchen, as well as the bathroom and storage space.

Antonio Citterio designs Convivium kitchen for Arclinea. Convivium is an open living space, a kitchen as an organised area, where solutions are the outcome of their location. Storage, oven and washing areas can be concentrated in an adjacent yet separate zone: the �Closet�, a closed walk-in cabin that is made to fit and helps to organise not only activity in the house, but also its architectonic layout. And where the kitchen is the centre of the home, the island, freed from its service functions, becomes the true centre for rapport between the cook and the others: a wooden dining table is integrated with the island where food preparation and cooking takes place, in concert with the ritual of dining and entertaining. Socialising opens up to include cooking and vice versa, in a continual interlacing of relationships.

Binova has presented new kitchens at Eurocucina 2008. Anima kitchen is designed by Emanuel Gargano and Marco Fagioli. It has a motorized integrated cabinet that lifts up showing the utensils used for the cooking. The double-sided cabinet can house also monitors, DVD/CD readers and a mobile bar. Prima AV model has been designed by Paolo Nava and Fabio Casiraghi. The model can be accessible from both sizes � the back and the front. The wall units �fall� from the ceiling and can move thanks to a sliding door system. Prima AV has a number of useful drawers and shelves. The hoods can be integrated and camouflaged.

The WinePreserva is a disk system which, when inserted in an opened bottle of wine, keeps the nose and taste of the wine �at restaurant quality� for up to 5 days. Less expensive than alternative products, the disk is simple and easy to use, and unlike conventional preserving techniques, does not contaminate or taint the wine.
